6 Preventive Measures Against Ovarian Cancer
Some of the common symptoms of ovarian cancer are irregular menstrual cycles, eating difficulties, and urinary problems; these are most noticeable when the cancer has advanced and spread to the abdomen and pelvis. If one is at risk of getting this cancer because they have a family history or carry genetic mutations, then they should have some preventive measures against it in place. Here are a few of them:
1. Diet
There is no denying the fact that a combination of a good diet and regular exercise can reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. If one can include at least half-hour workouts everyday to maintain an active lifestyle, and incorporate certain foods in their meals, then they can significantly minimize the risk for developing ovarian cancer. For instance, adding foods, such as green leafy vegetables, carrots, sweet potatoes, nuts, and beans that are rich in essential nutrients, can be beneficial.
2. Oral contraceptives
Women who consume oral contraceptives are found to have fewer chances of developing this cancer type. So, if one uses oral contraceptives for a long time, then their risk for developing ovarian cancer can be substantially minimized. But not everyone can use these, and it is advisable that one consults their doctor before trying them out. Birth control pills are known to trigger some unpleasant side-effects, and they may entail serious risks, like increasing the risk of breast cancer.
3. Surgery
Hysterectomy and tubal ligation can decrease the risk for developing ovarian cancer. However, according to experts, one should undergo these surgeries only for medical reasons and not because they can lower ovarian cancer risk. When one is scheduled for a surgery and they also have a family history of either breast or ovarian cancer, then they may opt to get both the fallopian tubes and ovaries removed. Doctors often recommend that the uterus be removed in a woman who is at risk of ovarian cancer, and who has already reached or is close to reaching menopause. Some women may opt to remove only their fallopian tubes along with a hysterectomy, if they are facing a low risk.
4. Carcinogens
Carcinogens are known as substances that trigger cancer, and some of these will actually do that when one is already at risk. In such cases, it is best to stay away from products, such as talcum powder, makeup, and vaginal deodorants to minimize the risk. Many women tend to use products in areas near the genitals, and this can heighten their risk for getting ovarian cancer.
5. Pregnancy
Women who give birth at 30 years of age or older have lower risks of getting ovarian cancer. Moreover, women who have breastfed their infants are also less likely to get ovarian cancer.
6. Lifestyle
One should ideally stay away from tobacco products; this is a prevention method for not just ovarian cancer, but all kinds of cancer. Alcohol consumption must also be minimized. Besides, one should make it a point to exercise everyday and follow a well-balanced, healthy diet.
